diti Singh Sharma reveals her pre-show ritual: I have cups of tea and listen to Arijit Singh’s songs – With Aaja Ve Mahi, not only has Aditi Singh Sharma debuted in the non-film music space but the track has also made her realise the kind of support she has from industrywallahs. “So many people from Harshdeep Kaur to Akriti Kakar, Geeta Kapoor and Ravi Dubey, have shared it on their social media. I couldn’t sleep the first two nights because I was constantly checking who was tagging me on Instagram or Twitter,” giggles the young vocalist known for Dilli Dilli (No One Killed Jessica, 2010), Offo (2 States, 2014) and the title tracks of Golmaal Again (2017) and Veere Di Wedding this year, among many others. She talks about multi-tasking as a musician and shares her peculiar pre-show ritual.
A LONG WAIT
Aditi will complete 10 years as a singer in February next year — Dev.D was the first movie she sang for. The obvious question is, what took her this long to enter non-film music. “I don’t know!” exclaims Aditi, “A lot of people have asked me that. It’s not like I was averse to it or deliberately delaying it but I guess, it’s just a case of right things at the right time.” She elaborates, “When it comes to indie music, it’s an interesting call — what song to put out first, who should star in it, what genre it should be, etc. With films, these things are not up to me. So, I had a great experience in deciding all that.”
Though the songstress is more renowned for powerful songs like Main Heroine Hoon (Heroine, 2012) or upbeat ones such as Dhoom Machale (Dhoom 3, 2013) and Sooraj Dooba (Roy, 2015), etc, Aaja Mahi Ve is a mellow romantic track. Was that deliberate? “No, it wasn’t,” she tells us, “I wanted to put out music that I like and that’s what I plan to do in future. I don’t want to think about what will work and what won’t. With non-film music, I just want to release what I enjoy creating.”
GETTING BETTER AT EVERYTHING
Apart from being a playback singer, Aditi is constantly travelling with her band and now has a non-film music career. However, she doesn’t like one facet more than the others. “I’m trying to be better at all my musical personalities. So, I don’t have a preference between stage and recording studio.” Since she has a live band, too, we ask the vocalist if is there a pre-show ritual. “I have cups of tea and listen to Arijit Singh’s songs,” she laughs, “It’s only his songs and I find it disturbing (not in a negative way) because I don’t know why. I’ve been doing this for the last couple of years.”
Aditi has sung for some of the biggest names in the industry, whether Amit Trivedi (Dev.D), Shankar Ehsaan Loy (Sooraj Dooba), Pritam (Raabta in Agent Vinod, 2015) or others. “I feel blessed that I got to work with such different composers as soon as I started my career. And it wasn’t like I had five songs with the same person in the initial phase,” she beams. The singer hopes to work with AR Rahman and Vishal Bharadwaj in future since she hasn’t collaborated with them yet. Currently, Aditi is busy with film songs, live shows, singles as well as #ADTUnplugged where she sings and plays the piano and uploads the video on Instagram.
